SDP President Dr Darakhshan Andrabi spoke on the occasion. A few excerpts of her speech:
· I thank the people of this far flung area for their love and respect and support shown to me. I feel very emotional at this moment and share my deep anguish about the treatment meted out to this area by its past representatives who have gifted backwardness and poverty to these hard-working nationalist population. When we are boosting of our achievements, the people here are craving for basic amenities. I request the people to give us a chance this time and I promise the people to see my dream of economic development as a practical reality on ground for this area.
· All the political parties of this state who have claimed to be better representatives of the people have on the ground proved themselves the blackmailers and exploiters of the public sentiments. All these political groups are the failed experiments. As a result they have directly or indirectly helped separatism and anti-national forces. These political parties have either ruled us at local levels or at central level but noconcrete public-oriented policy or programme is seen implemented for the common good at the ground level. All these politicians are only selling slogans and exploiting poor, ignorant people. I request the people of the state to reject these old failed political experiments and elect SDP representatives for this is the only political group of the state who owns a clean image, a clear economy oriented programme for the common man’s development and a subtle plan for industrialization of the state.
· All regionalist, communalist, separatist forces in the garb of the mainstream lot are bent upon dividing the people of the state and thus knowingly or unknowingly helping the agenda of our enemies. These forces should be nipped into the bud now. Government should shun the habit of acting late. People, the biggest power should reject this lot straight way so that the ways for the integrated development of the state as a whole does not get hindered.

Darakhshan for bridging the gaps

8/15/2008 12:57:23 AM
Shadow Correspondent JAMMU, AUG 14
President of the Socialistic Democratic Party Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi has said that she wants to bridge the gap between Kashmir and Jammu when all other politicians are bent upon polarizing the regions and communities. And that is why she has not suspended her nationalistic politicizing in both the divisions despite grave threats given to her and other leaders of SDP by anti-nationals and anti-socials. Addressing a largely attended public meeting in R.S. Pura today she said time has proved her right when during the recent past mainstream politicians like Farooq Abdullah and party and Mehbboa Mufti and party joined the separatist-agenda openly and led them all to the ugliest situation of the past sixty years. Dr Darakhshan criticized the state administration for its failure in managing the situation in Kashmir valley and ignoring nationalist Jammuites altogether. Dr Andrabi said that the role of Manmohan Singh's favourite Mehbooba Mufti during the recent days was greatly harmful to our national interests and she should be dismissed from the Parliament for her separatist attitude. She also criticized Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah for playing the politics of regional and communal hatred in the state. She said our entire mainstream politicians seem to be under the control of ISI and the separatist camp. She said all these are dreaming of creating a 1989 like situation in the state. But she said that it is just a nightmare of them and those who fear the strength of the separatists and militants should know that it is the last flame of the candle of separatism and militancy in the state and that is why it seen more bright and big. Dr Darakhshan Andrabi criticized New Delhi for wasting the time and allowing the state to such ugly situation. The SDP leaders led by Ajay Kumar and Surendra Bhagat burnt the effigies of Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti on the occasion. Other leaders of the party who spoke on the occasion include Iqbal Singh and Surendra Choudhry.

SDP President, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, while speaking in the occasion said frightened and scared by SDP increasing popularity in the area, the political opponents finding nothing concrete for criticism spread rumours that Andrabi is the sister of militant supporter Dukhtaran Chief Aasiya Andrabi. But all who know me although laugh at this baseless allegation of theirs. There is and can never be any relation with such a mindset. “She is anti-India and I am proud to be Dukhtar-e-Hind, the daughter of India,” said Dr Andrabi. Those politicians who live only on shouting about human rights violations in the State by the security forces keep mum when they see innocent civilians being killed and wounded by militants in broad day light. She flayed mainstream politics like Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Prof Bhim Singh and others for advocating for militants.

Amarnath Land Row: Darakhshan speaks at Jammu

SDP blames political parties for playing dirty politics
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, July 13; The Socialistic Democratic Party (SDP) today blamed the PDP, NC and Congress for playing the dirty politics over the Amarnath Shrine Board land issue which led the State to a divide on communal basis.
Addressing the press conference here, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, president of the SDP said that it was unfortunate that political parties like NC, PDP and Congress were playing dirty politics for their vote bank on the Amarnath Shrine Board. She accused the trio for their irresponsible role in the State, leading it to the polarization and strengthening the separatist and fundamentalist forces.
"We are facing such type of dirty politics right from 1947 till date and PDP and NC have again endorsed their character and Congress has also acted in the same fashion" she stated. Criticizing the PDP for playing dual politics, Andrabi said that for petty electoral benefits PDP played the whole drama on land issue and snapped ties with Congress but at the Centre it was going to support Congress for its vested political interests.
She also condemned the policies of NC and PDP to advocate Mushraf-formulae for Kashmir issue and asked Omar and Mehbooba to either hold tri-colour in Delhi as well as in Srinagar or join separatists.
She also appealed the Election Commissioner to stop those from contesting coming elections who were propagating separatism, communalism and regionalism in the State.

Darakhshan talks to MERINEWS 21.8.2008

Selfish politics responsible for Kashmir turmoil
At a time when the entire leadership of Kashmir Valley is singing pro-Pakistan slogans, there is one sane voice which identifies the turmoil as an attempt of Kashmir based politicians to end their increasing irrelevance in the political process..
Abhishek Behl, Merinews
MERINEWS TALKED to Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, a social and political leader and president of Socialistic Democratic Party, which has found roots in both the regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a freewheeling chat Andrabi delves on different facets of the recent trouble in J&K, and despite threats to her life, she minces no words in calling a spade a spade .
Q.What is your perspective on the recent turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir and who should be held accountable for this situation?
A. The recent troubles in Kashmir are the result of immature game of politics being played by leaders of different parties in Valley, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party lead by Mehbooba Mufti.
Mehbooba ji jis tarah se politics kar rahin hai who sirf apni kursi bachana chahti hain. Jammu Kashmir ke musalmano, hinduon aur kashmirion se unhe kuch lena dena nahi hai. (Mehbooba is only concerned with saving her chair. She is unconcerned regarding the fate of Hindus, Muslims and Kashmiris of the state)
I hold her responsible for everything which is going on in Jammu and Kashmir and killing of people in both parts of the state. I want to know why she withdrew support from Congress government in J&K and went straight to save the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government in centre.
She is a chameleon, who changes her political colours quickly. One day she supports the Indian government, the next day she wants people to go to Pakistan and all of a sudden she is now supporting the separatist cause and blackmailing the Indian government.
Bad politicians and those wanting to pursue politics for power have to be shunned and this message has reached the people.
Q. What is your take on agitation in Jammu and is it based on some reasons ?
A. Jammu ke log 60 saal ke baad Jagen hai (people of Jammu have woken up after sixty years). Theirs is a just and right movement, which has erupted because of the discrimination faced by the people for last so many years.
Amarnath land transfer is just a flash point, which brought out the latent anger in the hearts of people of Jammu region.
Despite the agitation being secular, attempts are being made to brand this agitation as communal, which is absolutely baseless. The Union government should wake up from slumber and take corrective action in Jammu to assuage the hurt feelings of the region.
If this does not happen then I apprehend that India will lose Jammu too as has happened in Kashmir. Entire Jammu and Kashmir will go.
India has to respect that people of Jammu are nationalists and their demands are genuine and not against Kashmiris or Muslims or India, so why not give them their due.
The interests of the people should not be sacrificed at the altar of Indian strategic interests.
Q. What is the opinion in Kashmir Valley and what does the common man on the street think about the entire issue?
A. People of Kashmir are innocent and they are not aware of the realities and the complex interplay of political forces. They are being led by selfish and incompetent leaders bent upon pursuing their self interests at the cost of the Kashmiri people and Kashmiriat.
Common man is a puppet in the hands of these leaders and has to do what is dictated by the powerful political leaders, who come from PDP, NC, Congress and Hurriyat camp.
Leaders of Kashmir know only self preservation and indulge in blackmailing India, which unfortunately has not been able to understand their politics and strategy and plays into their hands.
To be honest, in Jammu and Kashmir, even the ordinary Kashmiris do not get justice and due rights because of some sections of society, who control the economic, political and social sphere of the Valley.
Q. Are the people of Jammu and the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti fighting for a just cause?
A. The people of Jammu lead by the Samiti have every right to ask for land and this land should be given to the Amarnath shrine as its due. Jammu and Kashmir is a secular state with humanity as the bedrock of the society.
Mosques and temples and other shrines can be built in any parts of this state and this should be under no doubt.
Having said that, I also want the people of Jammu to exercise restrain and not indulge in any activity, which leads to the situation turning communal. There have been stray incident in which Gujjars have been targeted and this sometimes happen in an emotionally surcharged environment but things should not go astray.
Attempts are being made to sabotage the Jammu agitation and brand it anti-Muslim by Mehbooba, Omar Abdullah and Hurriyat, so people have to be really careful and not fall prey to their machinations.
Q. What role has the Centre to play to resolve the Amarnath imbroglio?
A. Jammu region and its people should be taken seriously and due consideration should be given to their demands.
The agitation has been peaceful largely and people have not taken up arms and they are hoisting the tri-colour.
India must understand that Jammu is also vital part of the state and the country and has to be given its due share.
Q. You are the lone voice of dissent in Valley. Are you not afraid to speak against the majority opinion and powerful leaders?
A. I am speaking the truth and I am not scared to do that. Threats have been there in the past and for long I have lived in the shadow of death. But this is the fate of entire populace of Jammu and Kashmir. Prophet Mohammad (SAW) guides me, he protects me and has told me to follow the path of truth.
I am not scared.

Darakhshan questions PDP standing

Don’t play with people’s sentiments for political gains: Dr Andrabi
News Agency of Kashmir
7/5/2008 9:42:37 PM
Srinagar, July 05 (NAK): Coming down heavily on Mehbooba Mufti for her statement that PDP ministers were mislead by the CM over Baltal land issue, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi today questioned and asked What right PDP has to lead the people when they are of so cheap character to be mislead over such a big issue that has resulted in paralyzing the state. In a statement issued here today She said those who claim to be representing religious sentiments of the people have always hurt our sentiments by using the masjids and ziyarats of our state for playing their petty politics,” said Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, president of Socialistic Democratic Party. She said that during the recent past these leaders only tried to mislead the people by their baseless and already failed political ideologies.

JAMMU & KASHMIR
The Centre and the state government are clueless in J&K, but not the separatists
By Kallol Bhattacherjee and Tariq Bhat

Meena is an employee at Jammu and Kashmir Bank and mother of a teenage boy. A resident of Shastri Nagar in Jammu city, she is learning to manage the bad times in her own way. "We have never seen so much political mobilisation and it took a while to find a way out to normal life in the midst of this agitation," she said. The strike called by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) drew mixed reaction in Jammu in the beginning. It gained strength by the day and as violent mobs took over the streets, eight people died. Meena was initially worried about getting groceries and about her son's education. "In situations like these, women and children are the worst affected," she said. She has found some shops that covertly sell groceries and vegetables.Anil Kotwal, another resident of Shastri Nagar, is a prominent campaigner in the area and mobilises hundreds of people daily for rallies, which usually start from temples and end at Army blockade. Kotwal's anger is infectious. "We have suffered 60 years of discrimination against Jammu by the Central government which is worried only about the welfare of the Kashmiris. We are determined to get rid of it," he said. According to him, the Amarnath land issue is just the tip of the iceberg.
The SAYSS was founded in 2007 by a group of old men led by Leela Karan Sharma to help the Amarnath yatris (pilgrims). It had remained in oblivion till Governor N.N. Vohra revoked an order to give land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board on June 29. The order had been issued by former governor S.K. Sinha and approved by the PDP government; the separatists in the Kashmir valley perceived it as a provocation. "I had gone to Srinagar for a case where I saw a Pakistani flag being hoisted at Lal Chowk; it was then that I decided to revive SAYSS," said Sharma. His close aides are Brigadier (rtd) Suchet Singh, former judge K.K. Prose, lawyer Tilak Raj Sharma and some retired academics and government employees. The movement coloured by Hindu pride spread rapidly. The struggle for land is not the only item on its agenda. "Preservation of our faith and culture, recognition of Jammu's unique identity and increased political representation of Jammuites in the state legislature are some of the issues that we are concerned about," said Sharma. Sangh parivar actively supports the movement. It also enjoys the support of Jat Sabha, Rajput Sabha, and Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Workers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal are camping in Jammu. "We came here a year ago and sensed the deep unhappiness over unemployment and other economic issues," said Kaushal Sharma, district organiser of Bajrang Dal in Jammu. Sharma, however, does not care much about the Bharatiya Janata Party. "The BJP has extended support to us and I welcome that. It might use the issue at election time, but we all know what the NDA government did when it was in power," he said.Jammu and Kashmir was left out in the delimitation of constituencies, as there is a freeze on such exercises till 2024. "Jammuites feel that they have lost another opportunity to get parity of representation with Kashmiris in the state legislature," said a government officer in Jammu. The discrimination charge is nothing new. In the 1960s, the government shut down ayurveda colleges in the state. Five students, who were protesting it, were killed in a police firing. In 1987, a similar protest broke out when the government decided to shift 19 government offices to Kashmir. "The Gajendragadkar commission, set up to inquire the regional discrimination in the state, says there is a deep regional divide between Jammu and Kashmir," said Virender Gupta, founder of Jammu Mukti Morcha, which campaigns for a separate state of Jammu. Predictably, political parties are trying to use the agitation to their advantage. "It is not a political problem but the issue has deep political implications and if political benefits flow to the BJP during the next Assembly elections and the general elections, then we should not be hesitant to capitalise on it," said Prof. Nirmal Singh, a BJP leader from Jammu. The CPI has asked for a special session of Parliament to discuss the matter. "Parliament can be convened to discuss any divisive issue, so where is the problem in convening it over the Jammu agitation?" asked CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan. The Congress, which was in power when the dispute broke out, seems to be the biggest loser. Mangat Ram Sharma, Congress leader and former deputy chief minister, said his party was acting in the interest of the state.None of the national parties has an influential leader in Jammu. "Kashmir has Farooq Abdullah, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. But political families are not active in Jammu," said Vikas Dutt, grandson of former deputy chief minister Trilochan Dutt. He quit the Congress to join the National Conference, a move which almost finished his political career. "We hope Jammu will witness the birth of new political leaders from now on," said Brigadier Suchet Singh.
Interestingly, while the struggle in Jammu has started a vicious street fight in Kashmir, some Kashmiris have come forward to support the agitation in Jammu. Notable among them is the leader of the Socialistic Democratic Party of Jammu and Kashmir, Darakhshan Andrabi, who is a staunch propagator of Indian nationalism. "My dream is to help Jammu forget all feelings of hurt and then I will launch a rally from Lal Chowk to Lal Qila with the Tricolour," she said. Andrabi is known as dukhtar-e-Hind or 'daughter of India' in Jammu.
The agitation had started on a religious issue and then gradually moved on to larger issues, leading to questions over its nature and future. Will the movement end with the conclusion of the Amarnath pilgrimage season on August 16? "We will intensify our struggle on August 18. On that day thousands of young people will court arrest across the Jammu region," said Sharma. "We will not give up until the government fully meets our demands on Amarnath pilgrims and Jammu's development."As both Jammu and Kashmir are boiling, the security system in the state is experiencing its worst days. "Jammu behaved well during the militancy days in Kashmir, but the last two months of protest have diverted our attention from anti-militancy operations. The past 40-plus days have been utilised by the militants to regroup and upgrade their operational abilities," said K. Rajendra Kumar, inspector-general of police, Jammu. According to him, despite the allegations of inaction and manhandling in the beginning, the police have managed the situation judiciously and stayed away from inflicting large-scale casualties on protestors. "The issue of land for Amarnath pilgrims is a political issue that needs to be resolved through a dialogue process involving people of both Jammu and Kashmir. We do not believe that political issues of this nature can be resolved by force," he said.According to Ram Sahai, president of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Jammu has incurred a loss of Rs 5,790 crore over the past couple of months. Another worry is the long-term impact of the movement on the region. "Kashmir is not the only place capable of producing terrorism. If the land for Amarnath pilgrims is not returned and Jammu's needs are disregarded, one cannot rule out rise of insurgency in Jammu also," said Kotwal. All the same, everyone is tired of the chaos. Meena wants to go back to work and give her kid a normal life; Kotwal wants to return to a life surrounded by friends and fun; Dutt wants to revive his political career. Yet normalcy is not returning to Jammu. It seems both sides of the Pir Panjal Mountain have become lost paradises. The situation is worse in the valley, where 25 protesters were killed. The killing of Hurriyat Conference leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who was leading a march to Muzaffarabad, capital of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, seems to have set off the ultimate defiance. Around two lakh people defied curfew to attend his funeral at martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar on August 12. "He was deliberately targeted because of his association with Hurriyat and the Kashmir cause," said Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at the funeral procession. "He is our martyr."The call for a march to Muzaffarabad was made by the Kashmir Fruit Growers' Association when their apple and pear crops worth around Rs 1,000 crore started rotting because of the SAYSS blockade of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. It not only caused severe shortage of essential supplies like fuel and medicine but also cut off the valley from the rest of the country. With the agitation in Jammu turning into a mass movement and the Hindu outfits hardening their stand, a dangerous divide is being created in the state. The separatists in Kashmir are making the most of the situation. They have even started saying that they would not oppose a separate state for Hindus in Jammu, in two and a half districts where they are majority."This is a dangerous situation," said a senior leader of the National Conference. "This is what we feared the most, especially at a time when the elections are round the corner." The immediate impact of the sharp polarisation would be the postponement of the Assembly elections. Obviously, the state needs some time to get back to normalcy. But reclaiming the lost trust will be the more difficult, if not impossible, job.

A prosperous and developed state is my vision:Darakhshan

"Poor Kashmiris represent Kashmir "
Darakhshan Andrabi, a poet heads Socialistic Democratic Party talks to Shakeel-ur-Rehman
Kashmir of my Dreams
(Kashmir Images, Srinagar/Jammu, May 6,2008)

1.
What does politics mean to you?
To me politics is a very noble and pious means of serving and representing the mankind. Being the follower of the great prophet (SAW), I believe in the politics as pronounciated and practised by him.His political vision of universality nourishes in me the belief that true politics is never inferior to any noblest profession in the world. When whole world accepts Hazrat Omar Farooq(Rz A) as the best public representative in the world, I draw a lesson for myself as a politician claiming to be representing the common people that true and real politics always associates itself with the day- to- day life of the common people and there lies no scope for sloganeering and hypothetical issues in politics of virtue. I have made this spirit as the guide for myself as a politician.

2. Corruption is so rampant in the state. Just two years ago, Kashmir acquired the dubious distinction of being the second most corrupt state in the country. What is more, politicians in the state are generally regarded as part of the problem rather than the solution?

It is hundred percent true. The politics of the last six decades has gifted us with a rotten system of governance and all the ruling political parties upto the present arrangement are responsible for this unfortunate situation. Our bureaucracy is also involved in strengthening and instutionalising corruption in the state.I think lack of immorality and dishonesty of our politicians is the main reason for this. We are as a nation witness to the illegal money and assets making of our politicians, both mainstream and separatists. Exibiting their chemeleon-traits,they claim to be representing people in distress while enjoying the luxouries after snatching their morsels.

3. Kashmiri politicians have traditionally displayed a dual personality. They have always tried to straddle the Valley's mainstream-separatist divide to get the support of people. When will Kashmiri politicians show political conviction?
This is high time for people to replace the sentimental exploiters. Those who forced and inspired our youth to take to violence and those who sponsered to transform Kasmhmir into graveyards are now to be exposed and rejected. Majority of our politicians ( both mainstream and separatist)have been befooling the innocent people by their issueless sentimentalist politics. We need a fresh economy-oriented politics for the state rather than relying on the old already failed political experiments.

4. Kashmir has no industry worth its name. In fact, the private sector is still to develop in the state. Is there any alternative development model for the state?

That is why I came with the sole motto of "Economic development and Industrial revolution" in the state. All political parties that ruled the state existed on the issueless sloganeering and it was always and is still beyond their perception to think about J&K in terms of industrial and economic development. They never mean the development at the gross root level. But now the young generation is there to pave way for the industrial development.

5. It is election year in Kashmir and the exercise has always been a controversial subject in the valley. Do you view elections as a vote for development or referendum on Kashmir?

For any civilized nation elections are the only means of achieving all. And Alhamullilah the people of the state understand this well and believe in the elections. The virtually supressed people of the state have voted in record numbers in the previous elections despite the efforts of the separatists to stop them from doing so even with the help of guns. The elections in J&K are both for development and also it is a refrundum repeated by them after every six years since the first elections after independence.

6. Kashmir is facing a leadership crisis. Sheikh Abdullah was the last mass leader who enjoyed a cult status. After him no one from the valley could gain acceptance? What factors do you attribute to it?

The ailing polical thoughts, unclear agendas and dishonest politicians can never make a mass leader of a big stature.Having said that I see hope in futue.

7. Lack of leadership has militated against Kashmir and continues to mar the chances of its settlement. Who in your view represents the Kashmiri people?
A poor Kashmiri represents Kashmir.A widow,an orphan,a destitute,a migrant,a frustrated unemployed youth represents Kasmir. Please tell the so-called politicians that they never represent them because their misery is your creation.
8. What in your opinion could be the best possible solution to the long-pending Kashmir imbroglio?

To stop youth from being killed any more and giving them a creative direction to lead this society so that a sincere leadership is created to address to the problems related to the state.

9. What is your vision about Kashmir?
A prosperous and economically developed state is my vision.I want Kashmir to acqiure its lost state of being the very high seat of learning which produces a leadership for whole of India. I want the young talent of the state to acquire universal acclaim.

Jammu, Thursday, Feb 21,2008

Dukhtar-e-Hind sends love to Pakistan

Let love flow unconditionally.................
Christening this Valentine as 'INDO-PAK LOVE & PEACE DAY',baskets full of flowers, glowing diyas and a facsimile of a gun with a message"Stop Sending Guns...Send Love"were floated in the gushing waters of the elegant Chinab in Akhnoor
Times of India,Jammu Plus,16th of Feb 2008
Report by Rajan Kour Akhnoor
It kept flowing passionately,as if well aware of its baptism as the 'River of Lovers'. Having immortalised itself in the folklore of Sohni Mahival, classicaly flowing Chinab--the respite for the adoring legendary lovers, assurdly carried the message of love for the neighbour Pakistan on the Valentine's Day.
Christening this Valentine as 'Indo-Pak peace & Love Day',baskets full of flowers, glowing diyas and facsimile of a gun with the message"Stop sending guns, send love now" were floated in the gushing waters of the elegant Chinab in Akhnoor, one of the closest connective to Pakistan from Jammu.
Having swallowed up almost 50,000 innocent lives, the two decades of terrorism in the state of Jammu & Kashmir has literary played havoc with the populace.Sources put that more than 30 thousand guns and more than 35 lakh rounds have been pumped into the state to perpetuate the violence against its naive inhabitants.
The initiative of a woman called Dukhtar-e-Hind(daughter of India),Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, the nationalist voice resonating with prideand love for the nation, the message for Pak President Musharraf and the people of Pakistan read,"We the people of J&K are happy with India, allow us to remain happy. We wish you peace and happiness."
Darakhshan and her colleagues from all regions and religions stood in the nimble water of Chinab to send an intense message of urge for peace and love to the neighbour.
In Darakhshan Andrabi, a woman apparently with soft demeanor, resides a forceful nationalist who without a cosideration for the life is moving ahead with the agenda of nationalism.Expresses Darakhshan, "My religion teaches me nationalism and I have never cared for the consequences to raise mt voice in my country's support amid the terror".
The sky was filled with colourful heart shaped balloons gesturing a wish for happy and joyful life for the people of Jammu & Kashmir who have undergone the agony of having lost their loved ones to the deadly monster of terrorism.
Conspicuous by their presence were people from all religions who seemed desparate to let Pakistan know of their spirited love for their motherland as echoed"Hindustan Zindabad",lending an inimitable gusto of nationalism to which the serene environs and lavish waters would remain a testimony.
Darakhshan and her Socialistic Democratic Party, colleagues plan to undertake similar venture through river Jehlum in the Valley. All these individuals are propagating an idealogy for the end of gun culture which has engulfed many unaware youth into its fold.
"Is desh ki mitti ka bhi mujh par karz hai" ,(I am indebted to the soil of my land),avers a sentimental Darakhshan, a woman who owns a strong heart to stand against the tide.Kites never rise with the wind but against the wind, it holds appropriate for the young Darakhshan from the downtown Srinagar.

An article on Kashmir Politics

Public Representation

and

Kashmiri Politicians

by

Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi

Phyllis A Millar, the reputed political commentator and the author of The Great Rulers and Public Representatives while referring to the Muslim Khalifa of Arabia Hazrat Umar Farooq ( Rz An) has in clear words reflected the fact that the true spirit of leadership and public representation which the Khalifa exhibited is the best example that can be presented to contest the claim of our present day politicians and public leaders that they represent the people.Coming home to the cursed heaven, the valley of Kashmir , we find many big names who claimed for the last sixty years to be the leaders representing the public sentiments and aspirations. Again they claimed to be the followers of the great prophet’s (SAW) and Hazrat Umar Farooq’s(Rz An) political ideology. And majority of these claimants have utterly defeated the sanctity of the public representation by their dualistic and parochial approaches. These politicians never cared about the hunger, lack of public amenities, unemployment and social exploitations. These issues were on the priority of the great Khalifa of Arabia which earned him the top place among the best rulers and public representatives of the world. Our troubles in Kashmir have the roots only in our (especially the political class) habit of behaving as hollow preachers. Practically we have been exploiting the public sentiment and projecting ourselves as the saviors of Kashmir. Exploiters of “ignorance” can never achieve the status of the public representatives. It is not the age of Sheikh Abdullah when for the throne you can change like a chameleon and in all situations succeed in engineering the killing of common people and stand on their corpses to look taller. This is the age of knowledge, the age of information and no one can exist for more time with the intention to contest this information and awareness revolution. The number of the local youth who could volunteer themselves to be killed on the call of those believing in violence has enormously decreased. Our politicians try to create the impression of huge public support by organizing big public gatherings in the capital city. But now everybody knows that the majority in the gathering are Dehadi Mazdoors. Yet the claim of public representation. Those who managed some seats in the last assembly elections on the very high megaphone claim that government jobs will be provided to one person of every family of the state ruled this state directly for three years and are still ruling indirectly . “ But where are the jobs?”, was a serious question which got a very silly reply : “ New Delhi didn’t allow us to do it”. Now yet again a mega- megaphonic slogan of “de-militarization.” They have resolved to let the innocent Kashmiris come out to streets in support of this yet again exploiting stunt to make them “in” again for the next six years. And then again their answer to our question will be : “ New Delhi didn’t allow us to do it.” But I know it is not 2002, it is 2007 now. Everybody knows that army is not as bad as they are. At least they provided more than 15000 jobs to our unemployed youth without claiming to provide. Could the job-sloganists of 2002 and the de- militarization supporters of 2007 do it during their rule. They have possibly become habitual of talking about what they know is impossible. Providing government jobs to one of the members of every family was a hypothesis and so is the de-militarization. Every educated and well informed person knows that these exploiters have nothing concrete to offer to the people to help them come out of poverty and economic backwardness in this era of overall development ,so they divert the public attention towards the issues like de-militarization . They want this state to go again to the state of lawlessness of 1990 for their existence because they fear peace because it always defeats the illogicalness.Majority of our politicians belong to the class of that Talkative Conch of the old primary school text book. They have much to talk to confuse than less to deliver to improve the lives of the common people. Gandhiji had such politicians in mind when he said that politics was the devil’s game. But I know it is the game of great souls. Rejecting the devil’s class of politicians, I travel to the great Hazrat Umar Farooq (Rz An) for the inspiration. I build a hope that a better and true representative class replaces the rotten lot.

Kashmiri Displaced Pandits:Darakhshan's Initiative

Meet the one-woman army working for Kashmiri Pandits

Express News Service
Neeraj Santoshi
Posted online: Monday, February 13, 2006 at 0338 hours ISTUpdated: Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at 1420 hours ISTJammu:

This young rebellious Kashmiri Muslim woman from the downtown Srinagar in Kashmir has a mission — very different from that of most of her political peers.
Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, who heads the Socialistic Democratic Party, is working relentlessly in the Kashmiri migrant camps here to motivate the young Kashmiri Pandit youths to fight for their rights and seek employment in their respective districts in the Kashmir Valley.
And it is not surprising today she successfully flagged off a second group of 36 Pandit boys, who will take part in the recruitment drive in the Territorial Army in Anantanag tomorrow, which is being specially held to meet the aspirations of the local populace in the Kashmir Valley. In the first batch which left some days ago, 38 Pandit boys had participated in a similar recruitment drive in the Baramullla-Kupwara region. Many of those Pandit boys have already been taken in.
Darakhshan said that she is not guaranteeing jobs to the Pandit youths, but she is motivating them to fight for their rights besides guiding them to get their share in government jobs in the state.
Talking to The Indian Express, Darakshan said that she was fed up with the lip-service of most of leaders who were practically doing nothing at the ground level to better the lot of the Pandit youths who have been languishing due to unemployment.
Asked what inspired her to help the displaced Pandit youths in Jammu, she said, ‘‘I just listened to the voice of my conscience and felt I should help my brothers in distress here. And I am just doing that,’’ she says with pride beaming in her eyes. Pointing out that there were a number of parties such as the All Party Hurriyat Conference, JKLF and PDP, who had been making tall claims of bringing Pandits back to their homes and hearths, Darakshan alleged that there was no seriousness in their cause. Taking a dig at the Hurrriyat, she further alleged that the Mirwaiz Umer Farooq’s recent visit to Jammu was a mere political gimmick to garner support of the Kashmiri Pandits here.
She also said that it was blasphemous on the part of some parties to propagate the ideas of self-rule and three different autonomous regions in the state as the state already has a democratically elected government.
Darakhshan’s efforts have been lauded by the Pandit community, especially in the migrant camps here. Agrees Pandit leader S.N.Dhar from the Muthi Migrant camp, ‘‘Darakhshan has been working with absolute devotion for their cause and we in the camps have reposed our faith in this young Muslim lady who sees us as a part and parcel of the secular Kashmiri ethos.’’

Need for change in Muslim mindeset:an Article

LAAL MASJID MINDSET
By
Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi

Pakistani government at last gathered courage to bombard the ill-famed Laal Masjid and arrested and killed those who had coined untrue justifications for violent means for serving the religious interests. It is quite untrue that the Laal Masjid inmates were an isolated lot. This is now a known fact that these propogators of violence in the name of religion were having full support of the so-called Jehadi organisations and the majority of the clerics in Pakistan and outside. Pakistan is a labeled Islamic country but its social and political standing of the last six decades proves it contrary to its labeled claim. It has established as a terror sponsoring country selling the Laal Masjid mentality to the rest of the world in the name of Islam.Islam means peace but the country which claims to be the Islamic Republic has emerged as the hub of the violence production centers. The Jehads of the great Prophet (PBUH) were only to stop agression from the enemies and establish peace. But Pakistan has become the strong exploiter of the pious concept of Jehad and has spread venom around the world in the name of this holy war and lastly has fell prey to it.
To me Laal Masjid is not a structure housing some mislesd people but a mindset that has been inculcated among a large section of muslims throughout the world.Myself being a proud muslim, feel ashamed of such mindset which has projected a very horrible image of Islam and muslims all over the world. It is not because of anti-Islamic intrigues that the image if muslims and their religion is projected negatively but because of muslims who allowed Laal Masjid mindset to be associated with Islam.I am of the firm belief that such muslims who carry the weapons in hand to attack have no right to call themselves muslims.a muslim can never be an attacker or aggressor.
Since that cleaning operation, I have been deeply pondering on the immidiate reaction that came out of my mind when I heard Musharaf boosting of eliminating the evil gang and again warning the supporters of violence in the name of religion with dire consequences.I feel fear with the groung realities at home where a mission of turning whole Jammu & Kashmir into a Laal Masjid is on. I find sufficient reasons at social, political and religious levels which can lead us to such awesome situations. With the help of Pakistan's Violence-Shops and ambassadors of destruction, attempts are on to convert the innocent minds of Kashmiris into Laal Masjids. This anti-Islamic movement in the name of Islam is operational at many levels.Mis-information about whole of the world affairs and the mis-representation and mis-interpretation of religious teachings are used as tools.Talking loudly about the peace and then supporting the violence and the killings in the name of religion was prevelent in the era of "Jahiliya" in Arabia before the great Prophet(PBUH) came to end this attitude.Isn't the same attitude of the religious, social and political leaders seen in Kashmir?I as a true muslim, and the daughter of the soil cannot be a silent watcher and allow my youth to be buried in graveyards. So I find it obligatory to vehemently oppose our political and religious shopkeepers and stop them from erecting the unpious Laal Masjids in the minds of the youth. We are indebted to the Hazrat Sheikh Nooruddin (Nund Reshi)for making us understand the meaning of Islam in the right perespective. He taught us to convert our spades into shovels. He wanted us to be productive and not destructive.
Laal Masjid endorsed the untrue but common view of non-muslims that Islam preaches violence. It is the biggest challenge every muslim is facing now.As muslims it is our turn to clean the mirror that reflects us badly.I believe it is better to look at our weaknesses than directing the fingers towards others for our bad portrayal. Every muslim needs to come out openly against the inculcation of the mindset that gives birth to Laal Masjids.
We have hundreds of mouths talking about Kashmir, Kashmiriyat and so-called Kashmir issue etc but the biggest issue we are facing is the Laal Masjid mindset which is purely un-Islamic and has only extended our graveyards and earned a bad name to the great religion of Peace.

Kashmiri women venturing into politics
Monday, September 24, 200714:33 IST

Jammu: Having suffered hugely from years of relentless violence, women in Jammu and Kashmir are fast taking to politics to fight for their rights.
Women, they say, are not represented adequately and not much is being done for them in a state where families, particularly girls and women, have borne the brunt of suffering since insurgency began in 1989. By joining politics they want a space in the decision-making process, they say.
For years after independence, Begum Akbar Jehan, also known as "Madr-e-Mehraban", wife of legendary Kashmiri leader Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, was an iconic figure in Kashmiri politics.
In 1996, another Kashmiri woman,
Mehboob Mufti made a mark. She was among the two women elected to the legislative assembly along with Sakina Ittoo, daughter of a National Conference leader.
But it was Mehbooba who took centre-stage, despite the fact that Ittoo was a minister in the National Conference government. Mehbooba overshadowed even her male rivals by her articulation and especially by highlighting the human rights issues and the plight of women in Kashmir."I have learnt everything from my father, but the women found a special relationship with me," she observes in her interviews.
Darakhshan Andrabi, who holds a doctorate and is an Urdu poet, has also made it to politics under the banner of her party, Socialistic Democratic Party. Hers is a greater challenge. "I talk pro-people and I am a nationalist," she says.
Andrabi, always dressed in white, pursues a vibrant pro-India line in the Kashmir valley, where her views are considered a taboo. She is the one who challenges the secessionists, their ways, means and agenda.
"What have they given to the people", she asks and answers: "Death and destruction."
She has already declared her intention to field 30 candidates in the assembly elections, due next year.
As more women are coming to head political parties, and several others are making it to key positions in political groups, educated women are quitting their jobs and joining politics.

STAFF REPORTERJAMMU--31st Dec: Expressing discontent over the attitude of politicians who are hell bent to disrupt the on going peaceful life of people of the State by strengthening ties with anti-national elements, Socialistic Democratic Party (SDP) President, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi on Monday said that every citizen should be proud to be an Indian.Addressing the media and party workers here on Monday on the eve of New Year, she asked the people to reduce confusion created by certain vested political parties. VOTE FOR PEACE:a campain of SDP in J&K

Socialistic Democratic Party’s Mission
AMAN KAY LIYAY RAISHUMARI

During the last more than six decades, the politicians of Kashmir have been exploiting the ignorance and innocence of the masses and thus enjoying power and amassing enormous wealth. For their poetry political interests they have been leading the common man to graveyards or the kingdoms of economic backwardness and themselves living in palatial houses and enjoying the luxuries of the world. The state has been experience the bloody period for the last eighteen years now. Those who guided our youth to violence and the graveyards and have amassed enormous and assets wealth for themselves and gifted us with thousands of Orphans and widows. They have been misusing the great religion of peace ( Islam) for letting lose an eara of arson, loot and killings. Kashmiri has been exploited in the name of special status, Rai Shumari, Azadi, Autonomy or Demilitarization Slogans. And a common man is fed up with this all. He needs only peace___peace for security, peace for development and for the better future of their next generation. Those politicians who claim public support for their separatist or slogans ideologies are now befooling themselves every body has seen same crowd clapping for Geelani or Malik and Manmohan Singh or Vajpayee. This is all rented crowed. The common man only stands for peace and rejects all other things. J&K has seen enough violence, enough crime and enough torture Hence I have come out with my ballot box asking for votes for peace. I will snow. how to the world that majority of the common people of this troubled state want peace and reject all other slogans that have deprived them of their kiths and kins and fetched them misery and poverty and uncertainty for children.
“Peace” is the mission of the great Prophet (PBUH). I will carry this “ Aman Kay Liyay Raishmari” campaign to all parts of the troubled state and prove that peace only wins the vote. It is the vote for security, development and employment.

Abid Gowhar interviews Dr. Darakhshan

Saturday, March 15, 2008
Mein Bharat Ki Deewani Hoon”

A young poet; Kashmiri Lady with new political song"

She likes to be different than others, whether it’s her poetry, intellect or other circumstances in her life. This young lady from Lalbazar Srinagar is enriched with so much versatility that, in local literary forums, she is renowned for her Urdu prose and poetry, in social forums she has an urge to help the distress people and in politics, she has courage to open-up against all odds with a unique manifesto.
She is Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, a doctorate in Urdu, winner of many National awards including “Vijay Sammaan”, an effective writer and poet, author of many books and founder of Socialistic Democratic Party(SDP), a political party with patriotic agenda.
She spoke more about her life and ideology in an exclusive interview withAbid Gowhar (Freelance Journalist).

Question: Madam, Is it a poet, turning politician or a search for theme of your new ghazal or script?

I am a poet by birth having sensitive observations all around and of course intend to change the theme of modern politics not only by words but by actual deeds. I am not just turning to politics but like to help the people, who are mischieved by modern-day politicians.
Question: What attracted you to think about politics?

I believe that the people of the state have been ditched and deceived by the ambitious and selfish politicians in the garb of sentimental exploitation and sloganeering. We as a people have been left in a rudderless boat in the sea of misery by our own politicians. I never wanted to watch it all happening and just pass comments and talk against it at my own place as the majority of our educated people do. I believe we do not need impotent intellectualism to correct the wrongs in our political system but we need honest, educated class to come forward to replace the myopic politicians of the day.
Question: You belong to a reserved Kashmiri muslim family. Where from you get your education and how you managed to cross the social bearers?

Yes, I was born in an educated business family brought up in very strict but genuinely pious religious atmosphere but that doesn’t mean that Kahmiri girls have got no freedom of getting higher education or there is any social bearer to achieve good aims and objectives. I got my early education from English medium schools, got my masters in Urdu from Kashmir University before going out of the state for further education. I did my masters in Philosophy from Lucknow University and masters in Psychology from Aligarh Muslim University. I lately did Ph.D in Urdu from Guru Nanak Dev University for which, I worked on the literary contribution of the veteran contemporary Urdu poet Makhmoor Sayeedi.
Question: what about your literary tastes and script writing?

I remember, I was composing small verses even during my school days. When I reached college I found ways to different literary forums. I started with Urdu and then started to write in both Urdu and Kashmiri. I have presented my poetry all over the country and abroad too. I have produced and directed a Current affairs mega series "Khoon Kay Ansoo" for Dordharshan. In addition to my own productions I scripted fifty episodes of diverse nature for other producers also.
Question: What about your various publications to your name?

My writings have been published in different leading papers and journals. Again my Urdu short story collection "Khoon Ki Lakeraein" has also been published. Other books include “Jahaar” (A translation anthology of Indian Poems) and “Tarakh Nabech tarakh Moth”.I have co-translated Ex Prime Minister V. P. Singh's poetry into Kashmiri which has also come out in book form. I have translated the world famous poet Pablo Neruda into Kashmiri. I worked with Academy of Art, Culture and Languages for some time as Editor of their periodical “Sheeraza”.
Question: How far you feel encouraged by the feedback to your literary works?

I was honored with some very prestigious awards for my literary pursuits that encouraged me a lot. The prominent among them are, Sahir Ludhyanvi Award , Shair-e-Wattan Award and very dear to me the Vijey Sammaan from Government of India for gallantry of my pen.
Question: You are a different voice in whole of J&K’s political arena. What inspires you to be unique in a terror enveloped state?

My love for my country. “Mein Bharat Ki Deewani Hoon”. My patriotism leads me to be brave and present the truth as it is. I believe people of J&K right from 1947 have been exploited by political leaders by their semi-separatist ideologies and sentimentalist theories. I want to tell the truth to the innocent people of J&K. That is what I am doing…….
Question: What about the present political slogans like “Self Rule” and “Demilitarization” ?

I believe it is mere separatism. It is the repetition of Sheikh Abdullah type of politics. “Aadha Idhar,Aadha Udhar”. People in militancy-infested areas are living a fearless life because army is there. Demilitarization means gifting J&K to terrorists, Self Rule is confusion synonymous with PDP. My party (SDP) will never allow this all to happen.
Question: You seem a staunch opposer of Hurriyat Conference also. Is it True?

Yes, they are killers. They are responsible for the genocide of our youth. They have used Islam, the religion of peace and universal brotherhood for justifying their criminal attitudes for their personal gains, amassed enormous wealth through Hawala and compelled the youth of the state to be killed and stay without objecting because of fear of gun. They are again exploiting the innocent Kashmiris.
Question: Do you feel yourself secure in the present situations of your motherland?

God is protecting me. The State government is trying to eliminate my presence. Despite my right to security, the police and the local administration has deprived me of my constitutional right. I respect constitution but am sorry to say that we have very biased law implementing agencies in Jammu and Kashmir. My party wants that our ailing system of governance should be properly treated.
Question: Have you been able put your voice forward in any of the forums out-side the State?

The majority of the people out-side J&K think that all Kashmiris are separatists. I have tried to break this unhealthy feeing. My slogan is “Hum Hindustan Say Hain, Hindustan Hum Say Hai”.
Question: You fought previous parliament election as an independent candidate but failed. Now you have launched a party (SDP) and have decleared your part's participation in the coming Assembly elections. What do you expect now?

We have already started the preparations. We are contesting in all the three divisions. Our party has earned the support of the people in many constituencies while as in some other constituencies we are working very hard. The youth of the state is identifying itself with the economy-oriented political ideology of SDP. I hope if there will be transparency in coming Assembly elections, my party will show its strength and win many seats Insha Allah.
